First Top 5 Wednesday

Talk about the books that you feel differently about after you've had time to think about them or re-read them. These are books that you gave a low rating, and then thought about it or re-read it and ended up loving. Or a book that you loved when you first read it, but after you've thought about it or you've gotten older, you see how many problems it had.

So, I'm going to twist this top 5 Wednesday a bit.

No particular order:

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

This was a required reading for my middle school and back then, I didn't like any required reading material. Short story short, I hated it when I first read it but picked it up again in high school and fell in love with it. There was something about it that was special and til' this day, it is still my favorite book.

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicolas Flammel (series)

I used to love this series in high school strictly because of the lore. Very few people can combine multiple mythologies and create brand new ideas from them. Even though the lore hooked me from the get-go, I realized in my college years that was its downside. There was too much lore, way too much plot, way too many characters, and way too much story. After a couple months of not reading this series, I forgot everything. I didn't have time to re-read the entire series and honestly, there were other books calling to me.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

You guys have no idea how excited I was when I saw this as a required book for my Villains class. I just knew this was going to be a 5 star read but as I was reading it, my glorious bright 5 stars dimmed with every chapter. I was settled on giving it just 1 star but after sitting on it, I realized my Villains class brought to light the complexity of the story so I couldn't give it 1 star. I settled on 2 stars.

Eve: The Awakening by Jenna Moreci

I go into immense detail in my review here as to why I'm disappointed with this read. I originally gave this book 3 stars but after sitting on it for a couple of days, I knocked it down to 2 stars.

Possession (the greywalker series) by Kat Richardson

I've followed this series since high school and it was the only book series I pre-ordered. To me, it had a perfect balance of everything. Just enough angst, just enough mystery, and just enough fantasy. When the second to last book was available for pre-order, of course I threw money at it. When it was delivered, I powered through it in one sitting and I wasn't impressed. It lost its spark. It lost the perfect balance that made me love the series. I was...bored. I thought about knocking off just one star but I kept comparing it to the other books in the series. I ended up knocking it down to 3.

*I know this is a day late. I completely forgot to publish it! Sorry!*
